Zombie Lounge 2011

I co-wrote these news bits. I wrote them in one day while simultaneously making deliveries at Edible Arrangements. They ran out of time to film all the clips I had in mind, and I cannot take credit for the chupacabra bits - the production team that day came up with that on the spot. Brilliant!!

My favorite joke in all of them was the joke about the city of Cumming. I should also mention that I wrote one clip that included a quote from an eyewitness to a zombie biting saying, "hide yo kids, hide yo wife! They be biting everyone up in here!"

365

This trailer came from several concepts that all slowly snowballed into one idea. It started with a line I misheard from another trailer for a movie. I don't remember the movie, but I think it had Jake Gyllenhall. What I heard was the lines, "...but I need you!" ad the girl yelling back, "...but I don't need you..." From there it took a couple months to figure out a good storyline around it. Why was she needed? Why could he not be needed now? what kind of dynamic was there, and why the change in feelings? Did he say something? Did he do something? I had too many questions, and no answers yet. Then came the idea of her being a singer, and she was rising and no longer needed him to become a star. But that left me with still the question of 'what did he do??' I saw a friend of mine on Facebook, had decided to keep a 365 day journal on Facebook. I had done that back in 1993 in a journal and thought I could maybe use that idea...then another friend had done a vlog for a trip he was taking. I am also working on a mockumentary trailer, so I thought - why not combine them ALL together...?
Video + blog + documentary = vlogumentary
That's when the ideas started coming and everything just fell into place for what you watch in the video below. Enjoy!

Circumstantial Guilt

This was one of the first good concepts I had when deciding to get into the film industry. There are so many aspects of this video/trailer/idea that I love, it's hard to keep things short and sweet so I will just let you enjoy for now and maybe add some more details and info later.

One thing that happened almost accidentally during the prep work (cleaning and rearranging the house) for this trailer, was that weeks earlier I had brought down my large stuffed elephant (he has a larger body than I do). I was moving furniture, and he was still sitting on the couch and while I was moving him a phrase popped into my head, "elephants never forget". That became a visual recurrence while filming. In the finished product you only see the elephant once (sitting on the couch behind me, while I try to remember my past), but edited out in several scenes are pictures, statues, and even books with elephants placed throughout.

There is also a bookshelf that sits behind JES as she is at the computer. The shelf also got edited out, but on the shelf is a picture of the two of us that we had taken the day before at the park (we took about 20, almost all of them hit the cutting room floor). Also on the shelf was a stack of music books with a package on baby onesies on top of the books. That gives a little back story into the character of Jessica. She was once an aspiring musician, but then life happened (as it often does) and the dream and goal of becoming a violinist was soon covered/overtaken with the life of being a mother and having to care for a child.

The photographs we took at the park the day before we filmed, also had some good insight into the character of Joe. The pictures were telling the backstory of Joe and Jessica and how they met, fell in love, and bought their first house. Joe's t-shirts that he wore were symbols of what was really happening. They were all dark colored shirts, and I specifically picked certain ones out of my wardrobe to parallel those times in his life.
"I have no idea what you are talking about" (foreshadowing)
"Batman" (a guy who leads a double life)
"Bleach" (his memory being wiped clean)

That leads us into the character of Joe and what we see visually as he progresses. He starts out wearing dark clothes, and sports a beard. Beards I have heard are usually symbolic of guys trying to hide behind something. So when Joe is at the pool (and in the edited pictures) he is hiding A LOT. When he is in the hospital and thereafter, he is wearing lighter clothes, sometimes even white. I wanted to parallel the cleaning of the memory, and also make him almost angelic - because in his eyes, he has done nothing wrong, he's still "momma's little angel", so to speak.

This was a video audition for our team to be on horror week. The show sends you to somewhere haunted for a week.

We filmed this in one day, at the same high school that MTV's Teen Wolf shot their show. It was a very creepy high school. Windows were broken, the doors were all bolted, locked and barred up. The field we ran through was a baseball diamond that had not been kept up. We walked around doing introductions for the camera for about an hour. Then we all sat down and just talked for 12 minutes. After a day of just editing and trying to piece things together, we had the video portion ready. We then lost a member of the group and added Patrick last minute - that's why he got to do all his stuff separately. Another day of editing, and one day of FX and music, and our submission was ready to go!

We didn't get chosen. :(
This was inspired by a dream Elizabeth had one night.

A new medical drug is on the shelves. Ten pills come per bottle. A man has just lost his wife and daughter in a terrible accident and is trying his best to cope. He turns to this new drug to stop his pain.

If you watch closely, there are numbers hidden within the video counting down to the last pill. Below is a breakdown of the numbers:

10 Apples by Dr Seuss
K-9 sits in the kitchen
8 of Spades
7's by Garth Brooks, and channel 7 on the TV
6:00 on the clock
5 nickels
Connect 4
3 Kings and 3 other movies (Just Like Heaven, Love Actually, Dan in Real Life - all 3 are movies about love lost) and the Third Book of the Dark Tower Series - Waste Lands
2 of us in the picture
ONE on the shirt.

SURVIVE

This video was created with the concept that things you cannot see are sometimes just as scary or even more. A man wakes up in a strange place, he thinks he is alone but soon realizes there is something else out there.

Sears 'Exploring My America' Application

This is the first video I and Elizabeth created together. We made it as an attempt to win a free road trip. We didn't win the trip, but we had a lot of fun making the video.

Some of the things that I love about this road trip video:
Actually look at what we have stacked up when E says, "I'm ready!" There is a croquet set, a rocking horse, birdhouse, water cooler...we emptied out the garage of whatever we could find...plus a suitcase.

The making of the tent. So many people were astonished by the collapsible tent that makes itself when pulled out of it's bag. Um, yeah...that was movie magic. :)

When you see Elizabeth answer the phone...I had to actually call her, because she wasn't sure when to answer the phone.

...we didn't get picked... :(
